Test your shipping rules at checkout

Test Shopify shipping rules in your store's checkout before relying on them for customer orders. For each ShipWith rule, use two checkout cases: one that matches the rule and one that does not.

ShipWith modifies delivery options that Shopify already supplies. Depending on the actions in your rule, ShipWith can hide, rename, move, reorder, or sort matching options. It does not create delivery options or change their prices.

Test safely with the Test status

The Test status lets you try a rule at your real checkout without affecting customers. A rule set to Test only runs for logged-in customers who have the tag shipwith-test. Everyone else sees checkout as if the rule were Off.

  1. In Shopify admin, open Customers and pick your own customer account, or create one for testing.
  2. Add the tag shipwith-test to that customer and save.
  3. In ShipWith, open the rule and set Status to Test. Select Save.
  4. In your online store, log in as the tagged customer, then run the checkout tests below.
  5. When the rule works as expected, set Status to Live and select Save.

The tag must match exactly, and you must be logged in at checkout. Guest checkouts never see Test rules.

Before you test

  1. In ShipWith, open the rule that you want to test.
  2. Confirm that Status is Live or Test.
  3. Select Save if you made any changes.
  4. In the Shopify sync section, confirm that Status is Synced.

Do not start checkout testing while the sync status is Pending, Failed, or Not synced. If needed, select Retry sync, then wait for the status to become Synced.

Test a matching checkout

  1. Review the rule's conditions, delivery option targets, and actions.
  2. Add products and quantities to the cart that meet the rule's conditions.
  3. Enter customer or delivery details that meet any customer or address conditions.
  4. Continue to the checkout step that shows delivery options.
  5. Inspect every delivery group in checkout and compare its options with the rule's actions.

A delivery group is a set of cart lines that Shopify ships together to one destination and presents one set of delivery options for. ShipWith evaluates each delivery group independently. A rule can therefore affect one delivery group without affecting another.

Confirm that the expected options are hidden, renamed, moved, reordered, or sorted. An action that targets specific options only changes options whose title or handle matches its targets.

Test a non-matching checkout

  1. Change one important part of the checkout so that it no longer meets the rule's conditions. For example, change a product, quantity, cart value, customer, or delivery address.
  2. Return to the checkout step that shows delivery options.
  3. Inspect every delivery group again.
  4. Confirm that the rule's actions are not applied to the non-matching case.

Change only one relevant detail when possible. This makes it easier to identify which condition controls the result.

If the result is not what you expected

Check the rule in this order:

  1. Status: The rule must be Live, or Test while you are logged in as a customer tagged shipwith-test.
  2. Shopify sync: The status must be Synced. If it is not, select Retry sync and check again.
  3. Conditions: Confirm that the cart, customer, and destination details meet every required condition. Conditions within one group must all match; when a rule has multiple condition groups, matching any one group is enough.
  4. Targets: Confirm that each action targets the delivery option title or handle shown by Shopify. ShipWith can only modify options available in that delivery group.
  5. Priority: Lower priority numbers run first. Check whether another active rule changes the same option before or after this rule.

After making a correction, select Save, wait for Synced, and repeat both the matching and non-matching checkout tests for every delivery group.
