Choose whether a checkout rule applies to every order or only to orders that meet your conditions. In the rule editor, make this choice under Eligibility.

TODO screenshot: Eligibility choices in the checkout rule editor, showing Always and Only when conditions match

| Eligibility choice | What happens | When to use it | | ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Always | The rule shows its error whenever it runs at a selected step. It does not check conditions. | You need to stop every order temporarily, such as while checkout is closed. | | Only when conditions match | The rule shows its error only when an order matches the conditions you set. | You need to stop specific orders, such as carts below a minimum subtotal. |

Always is the default for a new checkout rule. If you use it to close checkout temporarily, write an error message that explains why customers cannot complete their orders. Set Status to Off or change Eligibility when you are ready to accept orders again.

With Only when conditions match, the conditions editor appears below Eligibility. Conditions within one group must all match. If you add more than one group, a match in any group is enough. See Combine conditions with AND and OR groups for examples.

Good to know

  • Eligibility and Status do different jobs. A rule that is Off does not run, even if Always is selected.
  • Always still follows the rule's selected checkout or cart steps. It does not make the rule run at every step. See Choose when a rule runs: checkout, cart interaction, add to cart.
  • If you switch from Only when conditions match to Always and save, BlockCart removes the saved conditions. Add them again if you later switch back.
