NEWDiscoverShipGoal– turn cart progress into bigger baskets

Set a Shopify maximum order quantity or order value to stop carts above a limit at Shopify checkout. You can use these Shopify order limits to discourage bulk purchases, including orders from resellers.

Before you start

You need an active BlockCart subscription to save a rule. Decide whether to cap the number of items in the whole cart or its value. To limit order quantity per product, see Limit quantity per product.

Set the limit

  1. From the BlockCart home page, select Create new rule, then Cart and checkout validation.
  2. Enter a descriptive Rule name, such as “Maximum 10 items.” Choose Standard input for Rule input.
  3. Under Eligibility, select Only when conditions match. Add a condition with Cart items total quantity is greater than your maximum, such as 10. This allows 10 items and blocks 11 or more.
  4. Under Display, write an Error message that tells customers how to fix the order, such as “You can buy up to 10 items per order. Remove some items to continue.”
  5. Set Status to Live and select Save. Test with a cart above the limit in Shopify checkout.

To cap order value too, create a second rule. In step 3, choose Cart subtotal is greater than your amount. Subtotal is before taxes and order-level discounts. If you want to limit what the customer pays, choose Cart total instead; it can include taxes and shipping.

Example

| Rule input | Conditions | Error message | | -------------- | -------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Standard input | Cart items total quantity is greater than 10 | You can buy up to 10 items per order. Remove some items to continue. | | Standard input | Cart subtotal is greater than 200 | Your order subtotal cannot exceed 200. Remove items to continue. |

Good to know

  • Quantity counts all cart items. It does not identify resellers; it applies the same cap to every matching cart.
  • The limit applies to each order, not to each customer. BlockCart does not count past orders, so a customer can split a large purchase into several orders.
  • Amounts use the number in the customer's Shopify checkout currency without conversion. For different currency limits, use one condition group per currency with Cart currency. See Cart conditions: subtotal, total, quantity, currency.
  • Rule input is locked after you create the rule. If both limits are Live and a cart exceeds both, the customer can see both error messages.
