Create a Shopify checkout validation rule that stops an order below your minimum cart subtotal. You will choose what the rule checks, write the message customers see, and test it in Shopify checkout. This example uses a checkout in USD.
Before you start
You need an active BlockCart subscription to save a rule. If you have not subscribed, open Billing and choose a plan first.
Create the rule
- On the BlockCart home page, select Create new rule. In the dialog, select Cart and checkout validation.
- Enter a clear Rule name, such as “Minimum order $50.” This name is only for you; customers do not see it.
- Under Rule input, choose Standard input. It includes cart subtotal. See Pick the right rule type: Standard, Shipping, Attribute or Customer for other choices.
- Under Eligibility, select Only when conditions match. In Conditions, set the first condition to Cart subtotal, is less than, and 50. The new rule already has a first condition, so you can edit it directly.
- Under Display, leave Completing the checkout and Interacting with the checkout selected. Leave Target placement set to Top of checkout. Replace the default Error message with “Add more items to reach the $50 minimum order.”
- Under Status, select Live, then select Save in the page header. To try it with only your own account first, select Test instead. See Test your rules safely before customers see them. BlockCart opens the saved rule. Check Shopify sync. When its status is Synced, try a test checkout with a subtotal below $50. The message should appear in Shopify checkout and stop the order.

Example
| Rule input | Conditions | Error message | | -------------- | ----------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- | | Standard input | Cart subtotal is less than 50 | Add more items to reach the $50 minimum order. |
Good to know
- A new rule starts Off and is set to Always. Switch to Only when conditions match before saving this example. A Live Always rule would show its error for every checkout at the selected steps.
- Rule input is locked after you create the rule. Choose the input that has the conditions you need before saving.
- Several Shopify checkout rules in Test or Live can show several errors if they match the same order.
- If Shopify sync shows Failed, the rule is saved but may not run in Shopify checkout. See Understand sync status and retry a failed sync.
