Set a Shopify minimum order quantity (MOQ) to stop checkout when a cart contains too few items. You can count all items together or check each cart line separately.
Before you start
You need an active BlockCart subscription to save a rule. Decide whether your minimum applies to the whole cart or to each cart line. The examples below use a minimum of five items.
Set the minimum
- On the BlockCart home page, select Create new rule. In the dialog, choose Cart and checkout validation.
- Enter a Rule name, such as “Minimum five items.” Leave Rule input as Standard input.
- Under Eligibility, choose Only when conditions match.
- In Conditions, choose Cart items total quantity to count all items in the cart. To require five items on each line instead, choose Cart items quantity per line. Set the operator to is less than and enter 5.
- Under Display, write an Error message that tells customers what to add. For a whole-cart rule, use “Add at least five items to your cart to check out.”
- Set Status to Live, then Save. Check Shopify sync on the saved rule. When it shows Synced, test a cart with fewer than five items in Shopify checkout.

Example
| Rule input | Conditions | Error message | | -------------- | ------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- | | Standard input | Cart items total quantity is less than 5 | Add at least five items to your cart to check out. | | Standard input | Cart items quantity per line is less than 5 | Add at least five of each item to check out. |
Good to know
- Cart items total quantity adds quantities across cart lines. Two lines with three items each count as six, so they meet a five-item whole-cart minimum.
- Cart items quantity per line matches if any line has fewer than five items. A Shopify MOQ set this way applies to every cart line. It does not isolate a selected product or add together separate lines of that product. BlockCart can't set a minimum order quantity for one specific product. Adding a Cart contains condition doesn't help: the per-line check still looks at every line in the cart. A per-line minimum works best when every product you sell has the same MOQ, such as a wholesale-only store. See Cart conditions: subtotal, total, quantity, currency.
- Rule input is locked after you create the rule. If several Live rules match, customers may see several errors.
