You can set each checkout and payment rule to Off, Test, or Live in BlockCart. A rule that is Off stays saved but stops affecting Shopify checkout.
| Status | Who sees the rule | Synced to Shopify |
| -------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ----------------- |
| Off | Nobody. | No |
| Test | Only signed-in customers tagged blockcart-test. | Yes |
| Live | Every customer. | Yes |
New, duplicated, and imported rules start Off.
Before you start
You need an active BlockCart subscription to change a rule's status.
Checkout rules
- On the BlockCart home page, find the checkout rule in Rules and select its edit button.
- In Status, select Live to turn the rule on for everyone, Test to try it with a tagged account first, or Off to turn it off.
- Select Save in the page header.
- Check the status badge and Shopify sync section. If syncing failed, check the error and use Retry sync.

Setting a rule to Off removes its validation from Shopify. Its conditions and error message stay saved. Setting it to Test or Live again syncs the validation to Shopify.
Payment rules
- On the home page, find the payment rule in Rules. Its row shows Off, Test, or Live.
- Select Go live to turn a rule that is Off on for everyone, or Turn off to turn a Test or Live rule off. This action saves the change and starts a Shopify sync; you do not need to open the editor.
- Check the status badge after the page returns. If syncing failed, check the rule before relying on the change.

To use Test, select the payment rule's name or edit button. Its editor has a Status card with Off, Test, and Live. Pick one, then select Save in the page header.
BlockCart combines payment rules in Test or Live that use the same Rule input into one Shopify payment customization. Turning a rule on adds it to that customization. Turning it off leaves the saved rule out of the customization while other rules for that input continue to run. If you turn off the last rule that is on for that input, BlockCart removes the payment customization from Shopify.
Try a rule in Test first
The Status card has an info button that opens What is test mode?. In short:
- In Shopify admin, open Customers and add the tag
blockcart-testto your own customer account. - Set the rule's status to Test and save.
- Sign in to your store as that customer and go to checkout.
- When the rule works as expected, set it to Live and save.
Guests never see rules in Test. See Test your rules safely before customers see them.
Example
You can pause a minimum order rule without rebuilding it:
| Rule input | Conditions | Error message | | -------------- | ------------------------------ | ---------------------------------- | | Standard input | Cart subtotal is less than $50 | Add items to reach a $50 subtotal. |
Set it to Off and save. Set it back to Live when you want it again.
Good to know
- Imported checkout and payment rules always start Off and are not synced to Shopify. Review them, then turn them on using the steps above. See Import and export rules between stores.
- A status change can be saved even if the Shopify sync fails. For checkout rules, check Shopify sync and use Retry sync. For payment rules, check the sync badge in Rules and use the row's Sync action if needed.
- Setting a rule to Off keeps it in BlockCart. Deleting removes the saved rule.
